Lumberjacks Rely on New Starter to Defeat Outlaws

BOONVILLE, NY - New roles bring fresh opportunities.

And for Payton Hochhalter, he embraced the jump from the bullpen to the starting staff.

Hochhalter completed seven innings while forfeiting just one run to spearhead Boonville’s (15-10-1) 10-3 victory against Oneonta (4-21) Sunday evening at Hanson Aggregates Field.

But the right-handed pitcher got off to a rough start: Outlaw outfielder Dane Richards barreled Hochhalter’s first pitch, blasting it over the left-field fence.

Yet, the lead-off home run didn’t deter the PGCBL Week Five Pitcher of the Week. Hochhalter appeared relaxed and smiled as he returned to the mound.

The Jamestown, North Dakota, allowed just three hits across the rest of his outing and didn’t surrender another run.

A pitcher can separate themself by delivering strikes early in the count, and Hochhalter hammered the strike throughout the contest. The rising Jamestown sophomore used breaking pitches that clipped the inside corner of the plate to cause hesitation in the batter’s box, and he didn’t walk a single Oneonta batter.

Although Hochhalter only recorded four strikeouts, his breaking action limited Oneonta batters from making clean contact on his pitches, forcing flyouts and groundouts.

Hochhalter's start came after he didn't allow a run in his first two bullpen appearances of the season, and he boasts a 0.93 ERA along with a 0.72 WHIP.

The Lumberjacks’ lineup gave Hochhalter the luxury of pitching with a comfortable lead in the latter half of his start, plating six in the bottom of the third to take a five-run lead.

The hitting performance came after Boonville scored just three runs across their last three games, but it more than doubled that number against Oneonta, racking up 10.

And first baseman Carter McKay led the charge.

McKay returned from a trip to visit his family in Tennessee on July 3, starting both games in the double header against Mohawk Valley. The Memphis rising sophomore struggled at the plate in his first three games back in the lineup, striking out five times.

He broke this slump yesterday, recording a season-high three hits and two doubles to drive home three runners.

The Arlington, Tennessee, local flashed his pitching potential as well, relieving pitcher Riley Hasenstab and closing out the game in the top of the ninth.

Four other Boonville batters boasted multi-hit games, and outfielder Mason Resmondo posted his first extra-base hit of the season to get the slugging started in the bottom of the third.

Prior to the affair against the Oneonta, Boonville registered a season-high 14 strikeouts against Glens Falls on July 4.

The Lumberjacks struck out just five times last night and forced seven walks, battling in the box to work up pitch counts.

Outfielder Devan Meran spearheaded the squad’s disciplined approach, drawing four-straight walks.

Meran also displayed his fielding prowess, reacting quickly to fly balls launched toward left field and using his speed to cover ones that carried toward the warning track.

The Lumberjacks held their third-place spot in the East Division standings with the win, where they sit half a game behind the Stallions.

Boonville will face Oneonta again tomorrow at Damaschke Field.
